Setting up IPTV on a Firestick takes about 15 minutes: you turn on Developer Options, let the free Downloader app install apps, install an IPTV player, and sign in with the details from your provider. These steps work on current Fire TV Stick models (Lite, standard, 4K and 4K Max) and the Fire TV Cube.
What you need
- A Firestick connected to your TV and to Wi-Fi (5 GHz if possible)
- Your IPTV login: username, password and server URL (or an M3U link)
- About 200 MB of free storage
Step 1: Turn on Developer Options
Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About. Highlight your device name (for example "Fire TV Stick 4K") and press the select button seven times. A message says you're now a developer. Go back one screen and Developer Options appears.
Amazon hides this menu on newer software; the seven presses are how you unlock it.
Step 2: Install Downloader and allow it to install apps
- On the home screen, select the search icon and type Downloader.
- Install the app (its icon is orange).
- Open Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps and switch Downloader to On. On older software this option is a single switch called Apps from Unknown Sources.
Step 3: Install your player
Open Downloader, allow it to access files, and enter the download address of the player you've chosen. Use the address from the player's official website or from your provider's support; copycat files with similar names exist, and some contain unwanted software.
When the download finishes, choose Install, then Done. Downloader then offers to delete the file: choose Delete twice. Firesticks have limited storage, and a nearly full stick is a common cause of freezing.
Not sure which player? See how to choose an IPTV player.
Step 4: Sign in
Open the player and choose the Xtream Codes login (sometimes "Xtream API"). Enter:
- Any name for the profile
- Username and password, exactly as written (they're case-sensitive)
- Server URL, including
http://at the start and the:portnumber at the end
Type with the on-screen keyboard rather than voice input, which tends to add spaces. Save, and wait for the channels, movies and series to download.
Step 5: Load the TV guide
With Xtream Codes, most players download the guide automatically. If it stays empty after a few minutes, open the player's EPG settings and refresh it. More on EPG.
Step 6: Make it easy to find
Hold the Home button, choose Apps, highlight the player, press the Menu button (three lines) and select Move to front.
Common problems
"Install unknown apps" isn't there. Developer Options isn't unlocked. Repeat step 1.
"Invalid username or password". Check for a stray space, a capital letter, or a missing port in the server URL. See login fixes.
Buffering. A Firestick on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi behind a TV is a weak spot. Use 5 GHz, move the router, or add Amazon's Ethernet adapter. Restart the stick weekly. Full checklist: IPTV buffering.
Storage full. Clear the player's cache in Settings → Applications → Manage installed applications, and uninstall apps you don't use.
